How to Make a Fake WhatsApp Group Chat Screenshot

Build a fictional WhatsApp group screenshot with named participants, correct senders, readable group details, and an editable dinner-planning example.

Create a fake WhatsApp group chat by naming the group, adding participants, assigning each message to its speaker, and exporting a PNG. The dinner-planning example below already has a complete conversation you can edit.

Fictional whatsapp conversation: Dinner for four.

Dinner for four

Give each person a clear role in the headcount mix-up.

Timing: Hold the last reply until the headcount mistake is obvious.

Edit this script

Fictional starter. Free PNG download; video export requires Pro.

  1. Maya: Table for four at eight.
  2. Leo: Great. Bringing one friend.
  3. You: I am bringing one too.
  4. Maya: Then we are six.
  5. Leo: My friend is you.
  6. You: Mine is you.

How to make the group chat screenshot

  1. Open the example. Choose Edit this script above. It opens WhatsApp group mode with Maya and Leo as the incoming participants and the phone owner’s messages on the outgoing side. You can also open the group chat maker, choose WhatsApp, and select Group in the contact settings.
  2. Name the group. Open Group Info and change Group Name from “Dinner crew” to your fictional group’s name. Keep it short enough to fit the header. “Friday dinner” gives readers the setting without explaining the whole scene.
  3. Edit the participants. Under Participants, click a name to rename it. To add someone, enter their name in Add participant... and press Enter. Click a participant’s avatar to upload their photo. The outgoing side already represents the phone owner, so you do not need to add yourself as another incoming participant.
  4. Edit the messages and choose each sender. In Messages, replace the existing text. Click the sender name beside a message, then choose the participant who should send it. Keep the final two lines assigned to Leo and the phone owner so the dinner example’s headcount joke still makes sense.
  5. Check the header, times, and read receipts. Edit the group subtitle if you need a custom line, or leave it blank to show participant names automatically. Click a timestamp to open Edit date & time. Keep the messages in chronological order and check the read-receipt ticks beside outgoing messages.
  6. Download and inspect the PNG. Open Export and choose Download PNG screenshot. Open the downloaded file and check that the group name fits, the speakers are easy to identify, and both final messages are visible. If the image is crowded, remove an unnecessary setup line before making everything smaller.

PNG downloads are free without an account. Video export requires Pro.

Make the conversation easy to follow

Give each person a reason to speak: one makes a plan, another complicates it, and a third responds. Extra participants who repeat the same thing make the screenshot longer without adding to the scene.

The group picture identifies the thread; participant pictures identify people. Check both after replacing the starter’s names. If you enter a custom subtitle, update it whenever the cast changes.

Message timestamps show when the fictional exchange happens. Playback delays control when bubbles appear in a video. For animation, follow the text-message video guide after the still image reads clearly.

Try another group scene

  • Launch rehearsal: a routine project discussion ends with someone publishing too early.
  • The quiet group: everyone agrees to stop messaging, then immediately breaks the rule.

For a private conversation, use the WhatsApp chat generator and the general WhatsApp screenshot guide. For blue-bubble group texts, follow the iMessage group tutorial.

Before you share

Use fictional identities or the names and photos of people who have approved the scene. Present the result as a skit or mockup. The editor does not create a real WhatsApp group or send messages.

Put the whole group in the scene

Start with WhatsApp, assign each speaker, and check the final PNG.
